St. Matthew's Outreach Mission -- Belize

Kate Wyatt's February 9, 2004 Newsletter

Bienvenido a la vida de Kate
Welcome to Kate's life

I know it has been a long time you have heard from me, and I am really very sorry. I've been busy here in Belize, and my trip home at the holidays was a whirlwind of emotions, fun, friends, family, you get the picture.

I actually have been sick for about three weeks with everything from a cold to the stomach flu, YUCK, and then another cold. I am finally feeling better and have taken a Saturday to do some of the things that I need to get done, namely writing my newsletter. I pray this letter finds you all healthy, happy and joyful in the Lord.

This is Emily and me after we had taken the bus home from school. School gets out at noon on Fridays, and I think we missed the bus that comes through Concepcion at that time because we waited for what seemed like forever. I think I asked Emily four times if she'd rather take a taxi, but she insisted on the bus instead. So, we waited.

Almost into our sixth week of second term here and my little ones are moving right along. It is so fun to watch them learn and watch them get excited about speaking in English or when they know the English word for an animal or other object. Be praying for Hortencio because I think any day now he is going to start using English all the time. He understands English very well and when I hear him using Spanish while in class, I always try to get him to speak in English. Well, his response to this is, "May I go to the bathroom please?" because that is what he thinks I want to hear. Before I made that connection, I thought he may have a kidney problem because he was going to the bathroom an awful lot.

Since my return from the states, the Lord has provided so many opportunities for cultural immersion. I have taken the bus to Mexico with some Belizian friends and eaten at the Mexican McDonald's. I have been to a Belizian funeral, not exactly a highlight, but definitely a cultural experience in and of itself. Nicole, my roommate, and I were invited to a birthday party where we were the only friends there; everyone else was family. What an honor that was! Normally, I send money with a student of mine and his grandmother will fix something for me for lunch. Well, one day last week, I sent money, and when the food came via a cousin, my money came with it. Now, I know most of you are thinking, WOO! Free Food! Not exactly true. When someone cooks something for you, culturally, you are supposed to cook something and put that meal or whatever it is in the dishes that were lent to you. Because I'm not very good at cooking Belizian dishes yet, I baked some brownies and made cookies and sent them to her house the following week. Hopefully, that was acceptable.

"Lord, be with us this day. Guide us in choices we make and the things we say and do. AMEN!"

Please pray for:

The St. Matthew's and All Saints summer mission team coming to Belize in July. A team of about 35 people, they will come to Belize for one week of construction and Vacation Bible School service. Please pray for unity within the team. Although two churches are represented, it is one team that will make the trip. Pray for their focus to be on God and what He wants from them and for them. Pray for Doug Westcott, the team leader. Pray that he makes wise decisions and looks to Christ to guide his footsteps.

My students. Most of my students were out sick this week, so pray that health returns to those who were out, and that the ones that were not sick don't get sick. Keep the families of my students in your prayers.

The container that set sail on Thursday. Pray that it reaches Belize with no problems. Please also pray that all the items in the container make it through customs, that we find two drivers to drive the two new vehicles from Belize City to Corozal. Also keep Gary Chambers in your prayers as he files the paper work for the container and prepares to meet with customs agents in Belize City next week.

Melissa George, who is a science teacher coming to Belize on Wednesday for a 5 month internship. Pray for her as she makes her final preparations to come to the field; pray that her heart seeks Jesus, pray that her focus is on God and what He wants for her, pray that she arrives safely in Belize City.

Please don't forget to check the St. Matt's website for an update to my news and brand new pictures added this week.
